Rare and much sought-after, Porcelana cocoa beans are harvested to the south of Lake Maracaibo in Venezuela and are among the most expensive in the world. Called Porcelana as a reference to the “porcelain” colour of their pods, these beans are easily damaged and hard to grow. This has prompted many planters to replace them with more robust species.
